So here I was, sitting in my room, reading the latest issure of seventeen magazine, telling me all these ways to look pretty, and it occured to me; “Does it really matter?” Lately all you see on magazines is ‘How to look pretty.’ or ‘How to be a hotter you.’ Maybe even ’943 ways to look pretty for free!’ listed to the left. Nine hundred and fourty three things telling girls how to be pretty. Almost a thousand ways to make ourselves something that we’re not.
Friday night was my Junior Prom, and while I was sitting at our table, watching everyone, I realized something. I didn’t belong there. That wasn’t me. I had absolutely no idea who that girl in the long gown and updo with all that makeup on was! It made me see that all these girls are being pressured to make themselves look pretty, or perfect, or nothing but skin and bones. Society wants us to be something that we are not. To either have extremely long blonde hair, or a tan so orange you look like a carrot. (My male friends words, not my own.)
Society knows it, we know it, but still we all succumb to it. Everyone is so obsessed with beauty and perfection that we forget who we truely are. We’re all so lost and caught up in beauty, even the few of us who claim that we are level-headed and indiviual. I think it’s time to let go, be ourselves, and realize that every person is beautiful all on their own. Or sooner or later, we’ll all succumb to society’s pressure. Because, face it, we’re the bait, and society is our hook.
Suddenly so pretty?
