Suddenly so pretty?

So here I was, sitting in my room, reading the latest issure of seventeen magazine, telling me all these ways to look pretty, and it occured to me; “Does it really matter?” Lately all you see on magazines is ‘How to look pretty.’ or ‘How to be a hotter you.’ Maybe even ’943 ways to look pretty for free!’ listed to the left. Nine hundred and fourty three  things telling girls how to be pretty. Almost a thousand ways to make ourselves something that we’re not.
Friday night was my Junior Prom, and while I was sitting at our table, watching everyone, I realized something. I didn’t belong there. That wasn’t me. I had absolutely no idea who that girl in the long gown and updo with all that makeup on was! It made me see that all these girls are being pressured to make themselves look pretty, or perfect, or nothing but skin and bones. Society wants us to be something that we are not. To either have extremely long blonde hair, or a tan so orange you look like a carrot. (My male friends words, not my own.)
Society knows it, we know it, but still we all succumb to it. Everyone is so obsessed with beauty and perfection that we forget who we truely are. We’re all so lost and caught up in beauty, even the few of us who claim that we are level-headed and indiviual. I think it’s time to let go, be ourselves, and realize that every person is beautiful all on their own. Or sooner or later, we’ll all succumb to society’s pressure. Because, face it, we’re the bait, and society is our hook.

TWLOHA

twlohaToday is To Write Love On Her Arms day. To Write Love on Her Arms is a non-profit movement dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide.  TWLOHA exists to encourage, inform, inspire and also to invest directly into treatment and recovery.

TWLOHA has many visions, to read them all, go to www.twloha.com

Here are just a few:

“You were created to love and be loved.  You were meant to live life in relationship with other people, to know and be known. You need to know that your story is important and that you’re part of a bigger story.  You need to know that your life matters.”

“We all wake to the human condition.  We wake to mystery and beauty but also to tragedy and loss.  Millions of people live with problems of pain.  Millions of homes are filled with questions – moments and seasons and cycles that come as thieves and aim to stay.  We know that pain is very real.  It is our privilege to suggest that hope is real, and that help is real. ”

So today, November 13th, 2009, write the simple word “Love” on your arms. And let everyone know who and what you stand for and believe in, and together we can make this vision, a reality.

Kanye West. Seriously?

large_TAYLOR-SWIFT-KAYNE-WEST-SPEECH-BEYONCEYou know it’s sad when a washed out, 31-year-old rapper interrupts the speech of an 19-year-old country sensation. Yes, that’s right. Kanye West rudely and obnoxiously interrupted Taylor Swifts speech to tell everyone that “Beyonce had the best video”. (pictured left). How rude can you possibly be to take the microphone from her and try to get your stoned words out to the public? (Sorry Kanye, but Beyonce’s video’s are repetitive, and boring.)

Poor Miss Swift looked shocked after her biggest mom400_beyonce_tswift_090913_cpolk_90715520ent was ruined. But fans continued to cheer for her, even booing, whenever Kanye’s name was mentioned, opting instead to chant “Taylor! Taylor! Taylor!”

It’s also no surprise that even though Kanye did such a childish thing to Taylor, she let it go with class, and dignity.  Unlike Mr. West.

Everyone must admit, that Beyonce stole our hearts when she graciously backed down from her speech, and let Taylor finish hers. It was by far the nicest moment of the night.

On a much better note, the performances for the VMA’s were incredible. THe fashion’s were unstoppable, and Lady Gaga, well, who really knows?

The night was filled with fashion! On my best dress list are:

                                                             00027181
Taylor Swift
Taylor Lautner
Ashley Greene
Kristen Stewart
Shakira
Pink

And, of course, Mr. Robert Pattinson. Who’s gorgeous, all on his own.

Although Shakira and Pink both wore the same dress, both girls made it their own and rocked the night.

Overall, I thought the VMA’s were okay. Some of it seemed as though children were working to make this night fabulous. My vote?

4 stars.
